HAPPY SPOOKY SEASON!
President's Message
Greetings Fellow Rotarians,

In case you missed last week's meeting, our DOUBLE HITTER Speakers have inspired us to TAKE ACTION! We will be creating a special task force comprised of members to take on the opportunity of volunteering for both Meals on Wheels and becoming mentors for Give Mentor Love! More details to come after this week's Club Culture Committee Meeting.

Another opportunity to TAKE ACTION has presented itself at our meeting last week. Dave & Nancy shared with us that a dockhand/employee who manages the parking lots there by the Yacht Club and their boat, has lost everything in a tragic house fire! As of now they are looking for donations of clothing, furniture, and household items, so please reach out to Nancy if you are in a position to help!

Just a few housekeeping items before all of the great things to share:
  1. NO MEETING THIS WEEK - We are dark for Halloween.
  2. Club Meeting Fee Increase to $30: We have had to increase our meeting fee's from $25 to $30 to cover credit card and online transaction fees and our special VIP & Keynote Speakers.
  3. What Do The Club Meeting Fees Cover: We want to make sure everyone is aware that our club meeting fees not only cover the cost of the food, but also the room rental, staffing, and parking permits, which provides us the opportunity to call SMWYC home.
  4. BOARD MEETING NOV 4TH - Open to everyone! The Board will be hosting in-person board meetings the first Monday of each month starting with November 4th. Please RSVP in advance so we can ensure you have a seat! Details on the website.
  5. SOCIAL HAPPY HOUR - November 7th at Hacienda Playa Del Rey, CLICK THE LINK BELOW!
Last and perhaps MOST IMPORTANT! Please make sure to attend our November 14TH General Assembly. This is a members only meeting where we will be voting to adopt our Club Bylaws and open the floor for nominations for the upcoming 2025-2026 year.

THAT'S RIGHT!! The Board is expanding from 8 to 11 positions and this General Assembly meeting is extremely important, so please make sure to attend!!

WHAT'S EVENT MORE EXCITING ... We have 3 Candidates for Membership to induct at this meeting so make sure to join us in welcoming our soon to be MdR Rotarians!

I wish you all a very happy, safe, and SPOOKY HALLOWEEN!!

Yours in Fellowship,
Kurtis

MAUI HUMANITARIAN TRIP

Maui Humanitarian Trip Recap
When DG Albert Hernandez announced the limited-space humanitarian trip to Maui, it really resonated with us, and we were inspired to participate. We didn’t want to miss the opportunity to assist those in need right in our own backyard.

Day 1: O’hana Hope Village
O’hana Hope Village consisted of 88 small homes, where only 9 were occupied. We spent our time there cleaning unoccupied buildings and assembling furniture. District 5280’s generous donation helped purchase solar-powered batteries to provide the community electricity, allowing them to be completely independent from the power grid.

Day 2: Lahainaluna High School
On the second day, Rotarians split up into 5 different groups and locations. We spent our time at Lahainaluna High School where we were tasked with cleaning the field in preparation for a memorial ceremony honoring a long-time faculty member. We also focused on clearing the outdoor areas surrounding the metal and wood shops, ensuring the school was ready for the community to gather and pay their respects.

Day 3: Project Vision - Pu’uhonua o Nēnē
We joined Hawaii’s District 5000 Rotarians who support Project Vision, by focusing our efforts at Pu’uhonua o Nēnē - a temporary shelter for Maui wildfire survivors who were experiencing homelessness before the disaster. Rotarians split into teams to address several projects – building shade structures, organizing supplies, painting, and assembling furniture. We chose to sort and organize the abundance of donations the site had received, first, building shelving units to store all the supplies inside a designated shipping container.

Our hands-on efforts on these projects helped make our brief time in Maui feel even more impactful. The stark contrast between the fire devastation and the breathtaking beauty of Hawaii was profoundly moving. Yet, it was the unwavering resilience of the Hawaiian people that transformed this trip into an unforgettable experience, rich with 'Rotary moments' that will stay with us forever.
